A few months ago, I made a list of the top 10 songs to help you lean French. The list became so popular that I decided to make a second part, with 10 other songs, since learning French is not exactly an easy task and there are so many songs that can help a beginner to understand better the language of Baudelaire. Here they are, organized from easiest to not so easy. 1. Ces mots stupides, this version of Something Stupid (made popular by Frank and Nancy Sinatra) is ridiculously simple and the lyrics are so much like the original…

I was inspired by an exibition about French chanson that opened in Paris last March, 8th, to make a list of songs about Paris. So I inflicted myself with the herculean task of fishing the top 100 in this HUGE list of 2750 songs about the City of Lights. Problem was: soon, I realized that, not only I would need more the one day work on this list, a post with 100 players would be so big that no internet connexion would be able to charge this blog. So I cut down the list to 50 (which is still, way too much), and…

Many people who reads this blog comes here because they know that the best way to learn a language is listening to music. And unlike what many readers think, I do not speak French fluently, on the contrary, I would call my level low-intermediate. So today I decided to list some songs that have helped me better understand French. The songs listed were chosen because a) they have a very basic French, b) they are easy to understand; c) they are sung in a very clear French. I hope they help you as much as they’ve helped me! 1. Sympathique,…

As everyone knows, todays is the International Women’s Day and, although I’m one of those who are a tiny little bit against choosing one day to celebrate just the existence of a genre (and, hopefully, someday this will sound silly to everyone and an specific date won’t be needed) I do realize the importance of thinking and debating the value of women in society. Of course, since this blog is about French music, I chose some songs that talk about women from different points of views. Belles! Belles! Belles!, a Claude François’ version for Girls!, Girls! Girls! Belinda, by Claude…

A lot of people find my blog (the one in Portuguese) looking for expressions like romantic French music, the most beautiful French songs or French love songs. And since I believe this blog exists to help people find what they want, I decided to create a post only for the subject “love songs in French”. Whether you’re gonna use this list for some romance, or to cry over the lost lover, or even inspire a lonely heart, I made it list as a form of sentimental service, a romantic cuddle for the souls of the world. The cynic and cold…

Well, I guess it’s time for the year lists (OK, I admit, I’m a little late). 2011 was very good year for French music production, therefore, deserves a well thought list. There was new records by Bénabar, Alain Souchon, Coeur de Pirate, Camille, Claire Denamur, Thomas Doutronc Laurent Voulzy, a tribute to Gilbert Bécaud and even Christmas album of Michel Legrand. The reason I decided to illustrate this post with the pretty fine face of Coeur de Pirate is because she was the artist of the year. The young talented Canadian released a record the shone a little brighter on…

As I promised in this post, here’s a list of best French songs of 2010. I know it’s really late for that but, since this is a new blog, I guess that could be used as a good excuse. 2010 was incredibly good for French music, we’ve had Zaz and Ben l’Oncle Soul, and in my opinion, the two of them are all a year needs to be considered good. So, with no further delay, here it is: 1. Soulman – Ben l’Oncle Soul (Ben l’Oncle Soul) – I’m not even commenting on this choice. I love him. I know it’s pop…

On the original version of Under Paris Skies, I published, in the end of 2009, a list I made with the top 10 records of the decade. Since I didn’t manage to put it in order, I decided that the list would follow chronological order, since all the records bellow are so amazing. As you are going to notice, the list features mostly the artists from the nouvelle scène française, since I think they were the real stars of the decade when it comes to French music.Henri Salvador :: Chambre avec Vue (2000)The decade started great with this gorgeous record by…

People always ask me where to find a good compilation of French music. Of course, Paris has an atmosphere of love around it and if you go on Amazon, you are going to find a bunch of cheesy records filled with obvious romantic cliche songs played with the accordion for those people that want to buy not the real Paris, but what I like to call it the “Hollywood Paris”. But if you are a little more curious than that, and want to discover some real good French music, I got two records to recommend. The first one was released…

Whenever I meet a new person and talk about my blog, it’s always the same reaction. First, the person ask me why so much interest in French music and second they ask me to recommend them something and are always curious to know what my favorite songs are. To choose your favorite song(s) is a very serious and difficult matter and I just can’t help remembering Nick Hornby’s character in “High Fidelity”. Running the risk of been cruelly unfair, one day I decided to take the challenge and just choose, once and for all, the top 10 best French songs…
