Vieille Canaille

For Serge Gainsbourg fans, prepare yourselves to spend a small fortune on the 40th deluxe anniversary edition of his classic record “Histoire de Melody Nelson”. The release date is set to November 15 and you can pre-order it on Amazon for the price of US$ 172.48.

Speaking of Gainsbourg, I promised here on the blog to publish my list of top 10 favorite songs, so here it is:

1. Je suis venu te dire que je m’en vais
2. La Javanaise
3. Elisa
4. Marilou sous la neige
5. Le poinçonneur de Lilás
6. L’eau à la bouche
7. L’anamour
8. Ces petits riens
9. S.S. in Uruguay
10. 69 année érotique

P.S.: Some of you may be surprised to notice that the classic “Je t’aime, moi non plus” is not listed above. Don’t get me wrong, I like the song, it’s just that I think his work is so much bigger and interesting than his greatest hit, that I just didn’t feel like including it on my list.

If I could add just one more song to the list, I would definitely choose “Vieille Canaille” (the title could be translated as “Old Scoundrel”, which I think describes Gainsbourg very well and is the reason for the this post’s name).

Here’s a link to Ben L’Oncle Soul’s version of this amazing song:
